Blue Lagoon Beach, Padang Bai

A pocket of white sand next to the ferry port, with the reef starting a few strokes out. Bali's easiest snorkelling, as long as you come before the boats do.

Blue Lagoon Beach is a small cove on the far side of the headland from the Padang Bai ferry harbour, on Bali's east coast. You hire a mask at the warung for about 50,000 IDR, walk into the water and you are over coral with parrotfish under you in a few strokes.

It is also small, rocky underfoot, busy by late morning and only clear for a few hours of the day. Get the hour and the tide right and it is excellent.

Snorkelling at Blue Lagoon Bali, straight from the beach

The cove is one to three metres deep, over a fringing reef of hard coral, sand channels and boulders. At the outer edge the bottom drops to five to ten metres, and that edge is where the fish are densest.

Shallow coral reef with small blue and yellow fish, the kind of water you snorkel at Blue Lagoon, Padang Bai
Two metres of water, ten metres from the sand. Early morning is when it looks like this.

What you can expect on a normal morning: parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, clouds of damselfish over the coral heads, moray eels tucked into the rocks and the odd blue-spotted ray on the sand. A turtle or an octopus is a good day rather than a promise.

Is Blue Lagoon Bali good for snorkelling?

By Bali standards, yes. It is the easiest decent snorkelling on the island, because you need no boat and no guide. By the standards of the Great Barrier Reef or the quieter islands further east in Indonesia, it is a modest reef in a busy harbour town. A diver on the Tripadvisor forum in April 2026 made the same comparison with Queensland.

The same thread mentions plastic in the water around full and new moon, when the big tides and currents bring it in. Other days it is clean. If you have only one morning on the east coast and want the best coral, Amed is a step up. For a first snorkel in Bali, Blue Lagoon is the right place.

Where to snorkel at Blue Lagoon: the left side and Tanjung Jepun

Facing the sea, swim out on the left side of the cove, where the coral is fuller, and follow the reef edge rather than staying over the shallow middle. The healthiest reef nearby is not in the cove at all but at Tanjung Jepun, the next point along, which is where the boat trips from Padang Bai go.

Is there a current at Blue Lagoon?

Inside the cove, very little on a calm morning. It gets stronger towards the point and beyond the reef edge, and it builds with the swell. Do not swim out past the end of the reef, keep the beach in sight, and if you feel yourself drifting, swim across the current back towards the cove instead of straight against it.

Is Blue Lagoon safe for beginners and kids?

It is one of the better places in Bali to learn. The water is shallow and usually flat, and there is no surf break to worry about. What spoils it for beginners is the entry over rock and dead coral, so bring reef shoes, and the low tide, when the coral is so close that a kicking fin touches it. There is no lifeguard. Weak swimmers should take a vest from the warung.

Blue Lagoon snorkelling price: gear hire and boat trips

The cheapest way to see the reef is a 50,000 IDR mask from the beach. The best way is a boat from Padang Bai to Tanjung Jepun with a guide.

Boat prices are those listed by a Padang Bai snorkelling operator in October 2026, and they drop for groups of three or more. Converted at 17,970 IDR to the US dollar and 12,630 to the Canadian dollar on 2 October 2026.

The same operators run Manta Bay trips from 275,000 IDR and Manta Point from 500,000 IDR, leaving around half past nine. That is open water off Nusa Penida, for confident swimmers only, and the same site our Manta Point guide covers from the other side of the strait.

Blue Lagoon Bali tour from Ubud or Seminyak

A full day trip with hotel pickup, the boat, the gear and lunch starts at about US$75 on GetYourGuide. It costs more than the boat on its own, and that extra pays for the two hours of driving each way. A private driver for the day starts around US$59 per car, which is cheaper for three or four people who just want the beach. Partner link.

Diving: Blue Lagoon is also an easy dive site, to about 20 metres, and the dive shops in Padang Bai run it as a shore or short boat dive.

Best time to visit Blue Lagoon Bali

Three things decide how good the water is: the hour, the tide and the season. You need all three on your side.

Jukung outriggers and speedboats pulled up on the main beach of Padang Bai, Bali
Padang Bai's main beach, where the day boats wait. From half past ten they head round the headland to the cove.

Best hour: 7 to 10am

The water is clearest from seven to ten in the morning. From about half past ten the day boats from the south arrive, the sea breeze starts, the sand gets stirred up and the visibility falls. In the dry season it can reach 10 to 20 metres early on. After heavy rain the water is cloudy whatever the hour.

Early also means space. The cove is tiny, and at midday it holds a few dozen people with towels touching.

Best tide for snorkelling at Blue Lagoon

Mid to high tide. At low tide the shallow reef is exposed or a hand's width below the surface, and you spend the swim trying not to kick it. Any tide app for Padang Bai or Benoa works: aim to be in the water in the couple of hours either side of high tide, ideally when that falls in the morning.

Blue Lagoon Bali weather by season

The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest water and the calmest mornings. In the rainy season the reef is still there, but rivers carry silt into the bay after storms and you lose visibility for a day or two after each one. Month by month detail is on the Bali weather guide.

How to get to Blue Lagoon Beach from Padang Bai

Blue Lagoon sits just east of Padang Bai, over the small headland from the ferry harbour. From the village it is a short walk or a two minute ride, and from the car park a two minute scramble down a rocky path.

Parking and entrance fee at Blue Lagoon

There is no ticket for the beach in 2026. You pay parking at the warung above the path: 2,000 IDR for a scooter, 5,000 IDR for a car. Some sites list an entry fee of 10,000 to 15,000 IDR. We could not confirm it, but keep some small notes on you anyway.

The path down takes about two minutes over rough stone. It is fine in sandals, not with a pram.

Getting back from Blue Lagoon: Grab and Gojek

Grab and Gojek will bring you to Padang Bai without trouble. Getting a car back to the south or Ubud in the afternoon is another matter, and visitors regularly wait a long time or give up. Either keep your driver for the day or book the return before you set off.

Facilities at Blue Lagoon Beach

Basic toilets and an outdoor rinse shower at the back, run by the warungs. Warung Blue Lagoon and Warung Shanti rent gear and loungers and sell coconuts, cold drinks and fried rice. For a proper lunch with a view, Bloo Lagoon has a restaurant on the north side above the cove. Nothing takes cards. Down in the village, ten minutes away, Puri Rai, Omang Omang and Little Bay Coffee cover breakfast before an early swim.

Bias Tugel Beach, Padang Bai's other beach

Bias Tugel is the other good beach in Padang Bai, a 130 metre strip of white sand on the far, south west side of the harbour. Blue Lagoon is east of the port and Bias Tugel is west of it, so they are neighbours but not one walk apart. Getting there means going through the village to Jalan Penataran Agung, then down a gravel track near Bamboo Paradise hostel.

Bias Tugel Beach in Padang Bai, with warungs on the white sand and turquoise water, east Bali
Bias Tugel: more sand, more room, and a longer way in.

Entry is 10,000 IDR, plus 2,000 IDR for parking and 2,000 IDR towards beach cleaning, as charged in July 2026. The beach is wider and quieter than Blue Lagoon, better for a day of lying on the sand. For snorkelling, Blue Lagoon is the easier choice, and gear at Bias Tugel costs more, 100,000 to 150,000 IDR against 50,000 at Blue Lagoon. Bring your own if you plan to swim at both.

Which one? Blue Lagoon for an early snorkel, Bias Tugel for the afternoon on the sand. They make a good pair, and doing both in one day takes no planning.

Blue Lagoon and the boats to the Gili Islands and Lombok

Padang Bai is where most people leave Bali for the Gilis and Lombok, and a lot of Blue Lagoon visitors are here for a boat. The timing does not work the way people hope.

Fast boats from Padang Bai to the Gili Islands

Gili Getaway, BlueWater Express, Eka Jaya, Golden Queen, Semaya and others run the crossing. Tickets cost 325,000 to 530,000 IDR one way (≈ US$18 to 29.50 · C$25.75 to 42) for a standard boat, more for premium operators. The trip takes an hour and a half to two hours, usually stopping at Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, and some boats go on to Bangsal on Lombok.

Most boats leave between 9:00 and 9:30, with a few at 10:30 to 11:00 and the last around 1pm, not every day. Be at the harbour 30 to 45 minutes before departure. You can compare operators and book on GetYourGuide, where several include the transfer from your hotel to the port. Partner link.

Can you snorkel Blue Lagoon before the Gili boat?

Not on the same morning. The good snorkelling window is 7 to 10am and check-in for a 9am boat starts at 8:15. Do it the afternoon before, sleeping in Padang Bai, then swim again at seven the next day if your boat is a late one. Coming back from the Gilis, most boats land after the clear morning hours are over.

Public ferry from Padang Bai to Lombok

The car ferry runs from Padang Bai to Lembar in south west Lombok, around the clock, roughly every hour. The crossing takes four to five hours. It is the only option if you are taking a vehicle, and the cheapest one on foot: a walk-on adult ticket was 75,000 IDR at the last fare change in March 2024, so check the current fare at the port. The fast boats land on the Gilis or at Bangsal in the north of Lombok, while the ferry takes you to Lembar in the south west.

What to do near Blue Lagoon Bali: the east coast day

Padang Bai is the start of Bali's east coast, and the two most photographed places on it are within an hour. A morning swim followed by a temple in the afternoon makes a full and easy day.

PlaceFrom Blue LagoonGo for
Goa Lawah≈ 20 minThe bat cave temple on the coast road back west
Tenganan, Candidasa≈ 20 to 30 minA walled Bali Aga village, then a quiet coast town for lunch
Tirta Gangga≈ 1 hThe water palace and its stepping stones
Lempuyang≈ 1 h 20The Gates of Heaven, twenty minutes beyond Tirta Gangga
Amed45 min to 1 hBetter coral, black sand and a slower pace
Sidemen≈ 45 minRice terraces and weaving villages under Mount Agung, with Gembleng waterfall on the way

Blue Lagoon, Lempuyang and Tirta Gangga: the order that works

The three do not fit in one day from the south, because they all want the morning. The cove is clear before ten, and Lempuyang Temple has to be done at opening, before the queue for the Gates of Heaven reaches two or three hours and Mount Agung disappears into cloud.

With one night on the coast it is easy. Day one: Lempuyang at opening, then Tirta Gangga twenty minutes away, which looks just as good at ten, and down to Padang Bai for the night. Day two: in the water at Blue Lagoon by 7:30, Bias Tugel after, and back to Ubud or the south by mid afternoon.

With no night to spare, choose. Blue Lagoon in the morning pairs with Tirta Gangga and Goa Lawah on the way back. Lempuyang in the morning pairs with Tirta Gangga, and the cove at three in the afternoon is not worth the detour.

Where to stay near Blue Lagoon

For the early snorkel, or for a morning boat, sleep in Padang Bai itself. Bloo Lagoon Eco Village sits on the hill directly above the cove, OK Divers Resort is in the village with a dive centre attached, and Puri Rai is a simple pool hotel near the harbour. Prices and availability for the village are on Hotels.com. Partner link.

Blue Lagoon Padang Bai vs Blue Lagoon Nusa Ceningan

Two places in Bali share the name. The one on this page is a beach on mainland Bali, for snorkelling. The Nusa Ceningan Blue Lagoon is a narrow inlet between cliffs on the small island next to Nusa Lembongan, visited for the colour from above and for cliff jumping, and reached by boat from Sanur. If you are heading to the islands, the Nusa Penida guide covers that side. Check which one a tour means before you book.

Blue Lagoon Bali: common questions

What people ask before driving to Padang Bai for it.

Is Blue Lagoon Bali worth visiting?
Yes, if you come for the water and come early. It is one of the very few places in Bali where you can walk off the sand and be over coral with fish around you within a few strokes, and the gear costs about 50,000 IDR. The beach itself is tiny and gets busy by late morning. Arrive around seven or eight, snorkel for an hour at high tide, and it is one of the best mornings on the east coast.
Is there an entrance fee for Blue Lagoon Beach in Padang Bai?
There is no ticket for the beach itself as of 2026. You pay parking, 2,000 IDR for a scooter and 5,000 IDR for a car, at the warung above the path. A few websites quote an entry fee of 10,000 to 15,000 IDR, which we have not been able to confirm, so carry small notes in case someone is collecting on the day.
How much does snorkelling cost at Blue Lagoon Bali?
From the beach, about 50,000 IDR for a mask, snorkel and fins from the warungs. A boat trip that covers Blue Lagoon and the Tanjung Jepun reef costs 250,000 IDR from a Padang Bai operator if you get there yourself, or 550,000 to 650,000 IDR with a hotel transfer. Full day trips with pickup from the south or Ubud sold online start around US$75.
Is Blue Lagoon Bali good for beginners and children?
It is one of the easier spots in Bali, with water one to three metres deep inside the cove and no surf most mornings. Two things catch beginners out: the entry is over rock and broken coral, so wear reef shoes, and at low tide the reef is so close to the surface that swimming over it is awkward. Stay inside the cove, away from the point where the current picks up, and a confident child with a well fitting mask will be fine.
Can you swim at Blue Lagoon Beach?
Yes. The cove is sheltered and calm on most mornings, more so than any beach on the south or west coast. It is not a sandy wade-in beach though: there is coral and rock underfoot, and swimming is much nicer at mid to high tide. There is no lifeguard.
How far is Blue Lagoon from Ubud and Seminyak?
From Ubud, about an hour to an hour and a half by car. From Seminyak or Kuta, an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic. From Sanur, 45 minutes to an hour. Amed is 45 minutes to an hour north. Grab and Gojek will drop you, but finding a ride back in the afternoon is unreliable, so book the return or keep the driver.
Are there toilets and showers at Blue Lagoon Beach?
Basic toilets and an outdoor rinse shower, run by the warungs behind the sand. The same warungs rent snorkel gear and loungers and sell cold drinks and simple food. Bring cash.
Is Blue Lagoon in Padang Bai the same as Blue Lagoon in Nusa Ceningan?
No. Padang Bai's Blue Lagoon is a beach on mainland Bali, in the east, where you snorkel. The Blue Lagoon on Nusa Ceningan is a cliff-lined inlet on a small island off the south east coast, known for cliff jumping and the view from above. Tours and maps mix them up, so check which one a booking means.
Can you surf at Blue Lagoon Beach?
No. The bay is sheltered and there is no break, which is exactly why it suits snorkelling. Nobody rents boards here. On the east coast, surfers go to Keramas, closer to Sanur.
Can I snorkel at Blue Lagoon before my boat to the Gili Islands?
Not really. Most fast boats from Padang Bai leave between nine and half past, and you need to be at the harbour 30 to 45 minutes before. Snorkel the afternoon before, or the morning before a later departure. Coming back from the Gilis, you arrive when the water is at its least clear.
