White water rafting in Bali happens on two rivers. The Ayung runs through a gorge just west of Ubud and is where most trips go. Telaga Waja comes down off Mount Agung in the east and is longer, steeper and well over an hour further away.
Neither one is better across the board. It depends on three things, so set them below.
| From | Ayung, drive | Ayung, per adult | Telaga Waja, drive | Telaga Waja, per adult |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ubud | 15 to 30 min | ≈ $25 to $40 | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 | ≈ $35 to $50 |
| Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta | 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | ≈ $30 to $45 | 2 h to 2 h 30 | ≈ $40 to $55 |
| Uluwatu, Nusa Dua | 1 h 45 to 2 h 15 | ≈ $30 to $50 | 2 h 15 to 2 h 45 | ≈ $40 to $60 |

Ayung River rafting vs Telaga Waja: which is the best white water rafting in Bali?
Telaga Waja is the better river and the Ayung is the better trip. That sounds like a dodge, but it holds up once you set them side by side.
| Ayung | Telaga Waja | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Gorge west of Ubud, put-ins around Kedewatan, Payangan and Bongkasa | Muncan, Karangasem, below Mount Agung, close to Sidemen |
| Grade | Class II to III, touching III+ after heavy rain | Class II to IV, depending on the season |
| Length | 10 to 13 km, about 2 hours | 14 to 17 km, about 2.5 hours |
| Signature moment | Carved cliffs and a waterfall where boats pull in | A 4 to 5 m weir drop near the end |
| Minimum age | 6 or 7 at most operators | Around 6 on paper, 10 in practice |
| From Ubud | 15 to 30 minutes | 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 |
| From Seminyak | 1 h 15 to 1 h 45 | 2 h to 2 h 30 |
| Crowds | Dozens of boats on the river in high season | A handful of operators, quieter water |
Ayung River rafting
The Ayung is Bali's longest river, and the rafted section is the stretch where it cuts a deep, green gorge past Ubud. The rapids come in short bursts between long, slow pools, which is why families love it and some adults find it tame. The guide does most of the steering. You paddle when told to and hold on when told to.
What makes the trip is the scenery, not the water. There are stone carvings on the cliff face, a waterfall where most operators pull in for photographs, and villas of the Sayan ridge hanging over the gorge. You cannot see any of it from the road.

The downside is the traffic. In July and August dozens of boats can bunch up at the same rapid, and you will hear other groups more than you hear the jungle. An early start helps.
Telaga Waja river rafting
Telaga Waja rises on the flanks of Mount Agung and drops through rice terraces and forest towards the east coast. The rafting course is the longest in Bali, the rapids are more continuous, and near the end the boat goes over a weir of four or five metres. That drop is the reason people make the drive, and the reason it is no place for small children.
The river is quieter because it is further away. From Ubud you are looking at well over an hour each way, so the day works best combined with Sidemen or the water palace at Tirta Gangga rather than as a return trip.
How much does white water rafting cost in Ubud?
Around $25 to $40 per adult for the Ayung, with lunch and a pickup in Ubud. The number moves with where you are staying more than with who you book through.
| Line item | Detail | Order of magnitude |
|---|---|---|
| Ayung, booked online | Guide, gear, lunch and usually a pickup inside the Ubud area | ≈ $25 to $40 |
| Ayung, booked with the operator | Rp 450,000 to 550,000 at the better-known outfits, pickup from the main areas normally included | ≈ $28 to $34 |
| Pickup from the south or the Bukit | Often folded into the price, otherwise charged per person on top | ≈ $5 to $15 |
| Telaga Waja, transfer and lunch in | Longer run, longer drive, and fewer operators competing on price | ≈ $35 to $55 |
| Children | Usually a reduced rate, around three quarters of the adult price | ≈ $20 to $30 |
| Photos from the operator | Shot from the bank at the big rapids, sold per boat at the finish | ≈ $10 to $25 |
| Tip for your guide | Optional, per boat, handed over at the take-out | Rp 50,000 to 100,000 |
Almost every Ayung trip is sold as one package: pickup, guide, gear, river, shower, buffet lunch, drive back. The price differences between operators are small. The big difference is the pickup zone. Most include Ubud, many include Seminyak, Kuta and Sanur, and fewer include Uluwatu or Nusa Dua without charging for it. Read that line before comparing two headline prices.
Booking direct with the operator saves little, if anything, compared with a platform. What you get from booking ahead is a fixed price and a free cancellation window, which is worth having in the wet season. The cheapest roadside offers in Ubud usually mean an older raft, a shorter course or a guide who does not speak much English.
Bring some cash for the photographs and the tip. The photographer shoots from the bank at the big rapids and sells the set at the finish, and it is the only way to get a picture of your own boat, since phones stay in the locker.
What is the best month to go white water rafting in Bali?
You can raft all year. What changes is how much water is in the river, and so what kind of trip you get.
December to March: high water
The wet season fills both rivers. The Ayung turns brown and fast, the rapids join up and the trip is at its most exciting. It is also when operators cancel or change the course after a night of heavy rain upstream, and when children may be turned away on the day. Book a morning slot, since storms tend to build in the afternoon.

April, May, October, November: the sweet spot
Enough water for proper rapids, few cancellations, and fewer boats than in July. If you have a choice of dates, these are the months to pick for either river.
June to September: low and calm
The dry season drains the Ayung. It becomes a gentle float with a few bumpy rocky sections, lovely with children and flat for anyone after a thrill. Telaga Waja holds its character better, and it still has the weir. Our Bali weather by month guide covers rain, crowds and prices for each month, if you are still choosing dates.
River rafting Bali age limit
Six or seven on the Ayung at most operators, and around sixty five at the other end. The written rule is the easy part.
On the Ayung, most established operators take children from six or seven, usually at a reduced price, with an adult in the same boat. The upper limit sits around sixty five, and it is really about the steps rather than the river. Telaga Waja operators publish similar minimums, but two and a half hours and a weir drop are a lot for a six year old. We would not take anyone under ten.
Two things override the published age. In high water, operators can raise the minimum on the morning of the trip, so a wet season booking with young children needs a back-up plan. And the climb out of the Ayung gorge is steep enough that anyone with bad knees, heart trouble or a recent injury should ask the operator about it before booking.
Pregnancy is excluded in the terms of the operators that publish them, so check before booking rather than at the briefing.
Is it safe to go white water rafting in Bali?
With an established operator, on a normal day, yes. The exceptions are predictable.
Every commercial boat carries a local guide who runs the same stretch several times a week. You get a helmet and a life jacket, a briefing on the bank, and a short lesson in the calls: forward, back, get down. Class II to III water will knock you around and may throw you in, but it is not the kind of river that holds swimmers under.
The real risk is rain upstream. The Ayung can rise quickly after a storm in the hills, even if it is dry in Ubud. Good operators check the level in the morning and delay or cancel. Cheap operators are more tempted to run anyway. If your guide says no, it is not a sales trick.
Is rafting in Ubud worth it?
For most visitors, yes. It is one of the few ways to see the Ayung gorge at all, it takes half a day, and lunch and transport are in the price. If you have rafted serious water elsewhere, the Ayung in July will feel like a boat ride, and Telaga Waja is worth the extra drive. If you are travelling with children, the Ayung is close to the ideal first river.
Ayung River rafting, step by step: the day and the steps out
Two hours on the water, and the part people talk about afterwards is the staircase.
- Pickup. Between 7 and 9 am from Ubud, earlier from the south. The car takes you to the operator's base above the river.
- Locker and briefing. Valuables go into a locker, and you get helmet, life jacket and paddle, then ten minutes on the calls and how to sit.
- The walk down. Stairs and a steep path into the gorge. Depending on the operator's put-in, it can be anything from a hundred steps to around five hundred.
- Two hours on the river. Rapids broken up by slow pools, the carved cliffs and a stop at a waterfall. Most operators have a short break halfway with drinks or fruit.
- The climb out. The same steps in reverse, wet, after two hours of paddling, at the hottest time of day. Take it slowly. Nobody is timing you.
- Shower and lunch. Hot showers, a changing room and an Indonesian buffet at the base. The photographer's prints are waiting at the exit.

The steps are the real test of the day, and they vary a great deal from one operator to the next, because each one has its own path in and out of the gorge. If anyone in your group struggles with stairs, ask how many there are at that operator's take-out before you pay. Telaga Waja has much easier access, which is one of its few practical advantages.
What to bring: swimwear under quick-drying clothes, shoes that strap on, a dry change of clothes and some cash. Sunscreen goes on at the hotel. A waterproof phone pouch is allowed by some guides and banned by others, so ask before you rely on it.
Ubud white water rafting and ATV, or rafting with the Bali swing
Most Ubud operators sell rafting bundled with something else. Two combinations make sense, and one of them saves real time.
Rafting and ATV
This is the combo every Ubud operator pushes: the river in the morning, a quad bike ride through rice fields and mud after lunch, one pickup and one drop-off. It makes a full day and you come back filthy. Combined packages run roughly $60 to $90 per person with transfer, depending on the length of the quad ride and whether you share a bike. Our ATV quad biking guide compares the tracks and works out solo or tandem for your group.
Rafting and the Bali swing
This pairing works for a geographical reason. The Real Bali Swing at Bongkasa hangs over the same Ayung gorge, a few minutes from several rafting put-ins, so you can raft in the morning and swing in the afternoon without crossing Ubud. Before booking a combo, read which Bali swing you are actually getting: the park in Sidan is on the other side of town, and a combo built around it spends the afternoon in a car.

The full-day combo
ATV quad bike and white water rafting, Ubud
- ✓Ayung rafting and a quad ride in one day, with a single pickup
- ✓The headline price is often for one activity only, so pick the combined option
- ✓Tandem quads cost less than singles, and children must ride tandem
- ✓Bring a second change of clothes: the quad track is mud

White water rafting from Seminyak, Uluwatu or Nusa Dua
There is no white water in the south of Bali. Every trip sold there is a drive to the Ayung.
From Seminyak, Canggu or Kuta, the Ayung is one hour fifteen to one hour forty five away, depending on traffic, so pickups start around 7 am and you are back in the late afternoon. From Uluwatu or Nusa Dua, add another half hour each way. It is still a good day out, but you will spend longer in the car than on the river.
Two ways to make the drive worth it. Book a trip that includes pickup from your area, so you are not paying a driver on top. Or plan the rafting for the day you move up to Ubud, with your bags in the car, so the transfer does double duty.
Telaga Waja from the Bukit is a long day: close to three hours each way in bad traffic. Only do it if you really want the harder river, and ideally from a night in Sidemen or Ubud.
