Bali private driver: daily rates in 2026, what's included and how to book one

The car costs less than most people expect. The extras are what nobody adds up: far zones, entrance fees, parking, the driver's lunch and the tip.

A Bali private driver costs IDR 600,000 to 900,000 for a standard car and 8 to 10 hours, US$34 to US$50 or C$48 to C$72, for the whole car rather than per person. Fuel is included, entrance fees never are, and a day out east or north adds IDR 100,000. Prices checked on 12 October 2026, converted at that day's rate.

On this page

How much is a private driver in Bali per day in 2026?

The price depends on the car first, then on where you go. Almost every driver quotes per car for a day of 8 to 10 hours, sometimes 12, with fuel included.

Car, for a full dayDetailOrder of magnitude
Standard car (Avanza, Xenia)Up to 4 passengers with day bags, 3 with suitcases. What most quotes mean by "car and driver".IDR 600,000 to 900,000US$34 to US$50 · C$48 to C$72
Larger car (Innova, Xpander, Rush)Up to 6. More legroom on the long drives east and north, which is where you notice it.IDR 850,000 to 1,190,000US$48 to US$67 · C$68 to C$95
Minivan (Hiace)Up to 10 or 12. For a family group or two couples with luggage on an airport day.IDR 1,100,000 to 1,400,000US$61 to US$78 · C$88 to C$112
Luxury MPV (Alphard)Captain's chairs, wedding parties and business travel. Few operators keep one.IDR 2,400,000 and upUS$134 · C$191
Half day, 4 to 6 hoursStandard car. Not half the price: the driver still loses most of the day.IDR 400,000 to 650,000US$22 to US$36 · C$32 to C$52

The cheapest quotes you will see, around IDR 550,000, are usually a shorter day or a driver who expects to make the difference back on shopping stops. Above IDR 1,000,000 for a standard car, you are paying a hotel or a platform markup.

Bali private driver cost per day: eight sources compared

No one regulates these prices, so the only honest answer is to line up what operators and travellers actually quote. All figures are in rupiah, per car, for a full day.

For a standard car, every 2026 source falls between IDR 600,000 and 950,000. The odd one out is the 2023 range, which still circulates widely, and one guide whose own FAQ contradicts its rate card. Most of these sources are operators selling their own service: treat them as a market range, not as a quote.

Bali driver prices for east and north Bali: the far-zone surcharge

A day trip to Lempuyang temple means two and a half to three hours of driving each way from Ubud or the south, and drivers price that in. One operator publishes its surcharges by regency, and they match what others quote informally.

Where the day goesDetailOrder of magnitude
Central and south BaliUbud, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua, Tanah Lot, Bedugul and Jatiluwih.Base rate

Start between 2am and 6amSunrise at Lempuyang, a Batur trek or an early flight.+ IDR 100,000+ US$6 · C$8

Platform listings do the same in dollars: one GetYourGuide operator adds about US$25 per car for Lempuyang, Sidemen, Munduk or Lovina. Ask before you book whether the quote covers the area. A driver can refuse to go somewhere that was not in the booking, or charge the difference on the day.

Bali private driver hourly rate: overtime, half days and short hires

Drivers rarely sell single hours. What exists is a half day of 4 to 6 hours, an hourly rate for overtime, and a few operators who will quote by the hour with a minimum.

  • Overtime costs IDR 50,000 an hour with most operators and platform listings, IDR 100,000 with others (US$3 to US$6, C$4 to C$8). Paid in cash to the driver.
  • Hourly hire runs IDR 100,000 to 150,000 an hour (US$6 to US$8, C$8 to C$12), with a minimum of four or five hours. That works out close to a half-day rate.
  • A half day costs IDR 400,000 to 650,000 for a standard car. Enough for Ubud and one or two sights nearby, not for a temple two hours away.

The clock usually starts at pickup and stops at drop-off. Time spent waiting while you visit counts, so a long lunch or a sunset that you stay on for costs the same as driving.

Early starts: sunrise at Lempuyang or Mount Batur

A pickup between 2am and 6am costs about IDR 100,000 extra with operators who publish it. A sunrise at Lempuyang from Seminyak means leaving around 3am, so a 10-hour day ends at lunch. If you want an afternoon stop as well, book 12 hours or expect overtime.

What's included in a Bali private driver day, and what you pay on top

The quote covers the car, the driver and the fuel. Almost everything you pay for once you leave the car is extra, and it adds up to a third of the bill on a day with several sights.

Fuel, parking and the Bali Mandara toll

Fuel is part of the price everywhere we looked. Parking is the line that varies: some operators include it, others ask you to pay the attendant at each stop, usually IDR 2,000 to 10,000 for a car. The toll on the Bali Mandara road, the bridge across Benoa bay, costs about IDR 13,000 to 14,000 and only comes up between the airport, Nusa Dua and Sanur.

Entrance fees: the Lempuyang example

No car-and-driver price includes the temples, even on listings that say “all inclusive”. Lempuyang is the clearest case: cars stop at a lower car park, then you pay IDR 100,000 for the entrance and IDR 50,000 for the compulsory shuttle, per person, plus parking. In the rest of Bali, foreigners pay IDR 25,000 to 50,000 at Tegallalang, IDR 75,000 at Tirta Empul, Tanah Lot and Jatiluwih, IDR 100,000 at Ulun Danu Beratan and IDR 150,000 at Besakih.

Is a Bali private driver also a tour guide?

Not officially. In Indonesia, guiding is a licensed job, and platforms list “car with driver” and “car with guide” as separate products for that reason. Most drivers will happily tell you about Bali in the car. They do not walk you round a temple explaining it. For that, book a guide, or a charter that lists a licensed guide on board.

The real cost of a Bali driver day: three worked examples

The day rate is the number everyone quotes and the one that misleads. Here is what three typical days come to for two people, with every extra counted.

The car is only half to two thirds of the bill. With four people sharing, entrances double while the car stays the same, and the driver becomes the cheap part of the day. Your own lunch and drinks are not counted here.

How to find and book a private driver in Bali

There is no official register, which is why “best Bali private driver” threads fill Reddit. In practice there are three channels, and each has a trade-off.

Directly on WhatsApp: the cheapest way

A driver recommended by your hotel, your villa host or a friend who went last year, contacted on WhatsApp. You get the lowest price and the same driver for several days if you get on. Ask for the quote in writing: the car, the number of hours, what is included, the overtime rate. Some operators take a deposit of 10 to 30%, which is normal. Paying several days in full upfront to someone you have never met is not.

On GetYourGuide or Klook: card payment and cancellation

Klook and Viator rank first for “Bali private driver” for a reason: you pay by card, you can cancel, and the reviews are tied to real bookings. The price is not always higher: the best-reviewed car charter on GetYourGuide, with more than 3,200 reviews, read US$44 for a group of up to five and 10 hours on 12 October 2026, about IDR 790,000, right in the middle of the direct rates. The trap is the unit: some listings price per car, others per person, and US$40 per person comes to US$160 for a family of four. Check the zone covered too, since far areas often carry an extra.

Through your hotel

The easiest, and usually the dearest. Hotels work with drivers they know, which has value on a first trip. The price often includes a commission for the concierge, which one operator puts at 20 to 40%. Ask the hotel for the driver's own number: many will give it, and you book the next day direct.

Bali private driver reviews: what to check before you book

  • The driver's name, a photo and the car's plate, sent the day before.
  • A written price that says per car, how many hours, and what happens after them.
  • Whether parking is included, so it is not asked for at the end of the day.
  • No shopping stops you did not ask for. Silver workshops, coffee plantations and batik showrooms often pay drivers a commission.
  • Reviews that mention the same driver by name across several months, not just a company.
  • Working seat belts in the back, and a child seat confirmed in writing if you need one.

Booking a driver in July, August and at Christmas

A day or two ahead is enough most of the year. In the July and August high season and over Christmas and New Year, book a week ahead for a recommended driver or a minivan, and expect quotes at the top of the range.

Bali private driver itineraries: five day trips that justify the car

A driver earns the day rate on days that link several places with no good transport between them. These five cover most of what visitors book.

Ubud day: rice terraces, water temple and the Monkey Forest

Eight hours from an Ubud hotel. Start early at the Tegallalang rice terraces before the crowds, go on to Tirta Empul for the purification pools, then come back down for the Sacred Monkey Forest in the afternoon. It is also the one day where Grab could almost do the job, if you are happy to wait for a car at each stop.

North Bali: Ulun Danu Beratan, Jatiluwih and Tanah Lot at sunset

Ten hours from the south. Up to the lake temple of Ulun Danu Beratan in the morning, lunch above the Jatiluwih rice terraces, then down to Tanah Lot for the sunset on the way back. No far-zone surcharge, since all three are in Tabanan, but a long day on mountain roads.

Ulun Danu Beratan temple on Lake Beratan, the first stop on a north Bali driver day

East Bali: Lempuyang at sunrise and Tirta Gangga

The day where a driver is close to indispensable. Leave the south around 3am to queue at the Gates of Heaven at first light, then on to the water palace at Tirta Gangga. Expect the far-zone surcharge and the early-start extra on top of the day rate. The Lempuyang guide explains when to arrive and how the photo queue works.

Waterfalls and Kintamani: Tukad Cepung, Tibumana and the Batur viewpoint

Nine or ten hours from Ubud, less from Sanur. The canyon of Tukad Cepung in the morning light, the short walk down to Tibumana, then up to Kintamani for lunch facing Mount Batur. Kintamani sits in the far zone for some operators, so ask whether the IDR 100,000 extra applies. The Bali waterfalls guide has more to swap in.

Uluwatu at sunset

A half day is enough: the cliff temple, the kecak dance at sunset, and dinner at Jimbaran. Everyone leaves at once after the dance, and having the car already waiting saves the scramble for a ride.

Nusa Penida: the driver stays on the mainland

Your Bali driver does not cross. You get dropped at the fast boat harbour in Sanur, and you need a second driver on the island, whose roads are another matter. The Nusa Penida day trip guide compares a tour with the boat included against arranging both yourself.

How much to tip a private driver in Bali

Tipping is optional and not built into the price. The usual amount is IDR 50,000 to 100,000 for a full day (US$3 to US$6, C$4 to C$8), up to IDR 150,000 or 200,000 for a driver who went well beyond the job. Over a multi-day hire, some people give 10% of the total at the end instead of a daily tip.

Give it in cash, in rupiah, at the end of the day. Paying for the driver's lunch or inviting them to eat with you is appreciated too, but it is not a substitute for the tip. In the days before Nyepi, when families spend heavily on ceremonies, a more generous one is customary.

Private driver vs Grab in Bali: which is cheaper for your day?

For one ride, Grab wins easily. A Grab car from the airport to Seminyak costs IDR 130,000 to 250,000, and to Ubud IDR 280,000 to 400,000, as the Bali airport to Ubud guide details. For a day with several stops, the driver wins, for reasons that have little to do with price.

  • Getting back is the problem. Some villages and temples post “no online taxi” signs: a Grab can drop you there but not pick you up. Out at Tegallalang, Jatiluwih or Lempuyang, there may simply be no car nearby.
  • Central Ubud is restricted. App drivers avoid the streets around the palace and Monkey Forest Road, so you walk to a side street to be picked up.
  • Every leg is a new booking. Nobody waits for you at the temple, and each return trip starts with finding a car again.

Monkey Forest Road in Ubud. Booking a Grab here usually means walking to a side street first.

Grab Rent: an hourly car with driver in the app

The Grab app has a Rent option in Indonesia that books a car and driver by the hour, with as many stops as you like. We could not find current Bali prices from a reliable source, so check it in the app before you rely on it. Availability outside the south and Ubud is the open question.

Scooter or driver?

A scooter costs IDR 80,000 to 180,000 a day and suits short trips if you already ride. It is not the way to do Lempuyang from Canggu: six hours on a scooter in traffic is a hard day, and the Bali budget guide explains why most insurance stops paying out if you ride without a motorcycle licence.

Can I drive in Bali with a US driver's license?

Not on its own. Indonesia asks foreign drivers for an International Driving Permit alongside the national licence, and the police can fine you for each missing document. Even with the right papers, self-driving in Bali means narrow roads, scooters on every side and little parking at the sights, which is why so few visitors drive themselves.

Bali private driver: the questions people ask

Answers as at October 2026. Prices move with fuel and the season, so treat every figure as a range, not a quote.

How much should I pay a private driver in Bali for a day?
IDR 600,000 to 900,000 for a standard car and 8 to 10 hours in October 2026, which is US$34 to US$50 or C$48 to C$72 for the whole car, not per person. A six-seat Innova runs IDR 850,000 to 1,190,000. Add IDR 100,000 for a day in east or north Bali, and budget entrance fees, parking and a tip on top.
Can I hire a driver in Bali for a day?
Yes, and it is the most common way visitors see the island. A day means 8 to 10 hours with most drivers, 12 with a few. You set the stops, the driver waits at each one, and extra hours are charged at IDR 50,000 to 100,000 each.
Where can I find private car hire with a driver in Bali?
Three ways. A driver recommended by your hotel or a previous traveller, contacted on WhatsApp. A local operator's website. Or a platform such as GetYourGuide, Klook or Viator, which lets you pay by card and cancel, often at a price close to the direct rate. Ask for the driver's name and plate the day before whichever way you book.
Can you hire someone to drive you around Bali in your own rental car?
Rarely, and it is not worth it. Drivers work with their own car or their company's, and the car is most of what you pay for. Renting a car alone and hiring a driver for it costs more than a driver day and leaves you liable for the car.
Is it safe to hire a private driver in Bali?
Yes. Drivers booked through a hotel, an operator or a platform are the norm, and the problems people report are commercial rather than about safety: unplanned shopping stops, restaurants that pay the driver a commission, and a fuel or parking top-up asked for at the end of the day. Agree the price, hours and stops in writing on WhatsApp before the day.
Do Bali drivers speak English?
Drivers who work with tourists speak enough English to plan the day and talk about Bali, and many speak it well. Ask for it when you book. For a driver who also explains temples in depth, book a licensed guide, which is a different job in Indonesia.
Do I pay a Bali driver in cash?
Usually yes, in rupiah at the end of the day, after a deposit of 10 to 30% for some operators. Platform bookings are paid by card upfront. Keep cash for overtime, parking, entrance fees and the tip in any case.
Can a driver drop me at the airport at the end of the day?
Yes, and it is one of the best uses of a driver day: check out, see two or three places with your bags in the car, and end at the airport. Tell the driver your flight time when you book so the day is planned backwards from it.
Do I need to book a Bali driver in advance?
A day or two ahead is enough most of the year. From July to August and over Christmas and New Year, book a week ahead for a recommended driver or a van, and expect prices at the top of the range.
