Sanur

Bali's calm side: a reef beach, a path you can walk end to end, sunrise instead of sunset, and the boats to Nusa Penida at the end of the road. Right for families and slow trips, wrong for nightlife.

Sanur is the part of Bali that never tried to be the party. It was one of the first beach resorts on the island, back when Kuta was a fishing village, and it kept the pace of that era: a reef that keeps the sea flat, a beach path lined with low hotels and warungs, and an early night.

It is also the harbour for the islands. Every fast boat to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan leaves from the northern end of the beach, which makes Sanur the most practical base in Bali for anyone heading across.

Is Sanur a nice area in Bali, and who is it for?

Yes, for the right trip. If you want to swim in the morning, walk to breakfast, take a day trip or two and be in bed by ten, it is one of the easiest places in Bali to do that. If you want beach clubs, a late dinner scene or surf, you will spend your evenings in a taxi to somewhere else.

Sanur for families

It comes down to the reef. The water inside it is shallow and flat, there is no shore break, and lifeguards patrol the main stretch in daylight. Above the sand, the beach path is paved and level, which makes it one of the few places on the island where a pram or a child's bike works. Most hotels are low-rise, in gardens, and a few minutes' walk from the beach. Compare that with the west coast from Kuta to Canggu, where the ocean is open and the rips are real. The Bali beaches guide ranks the island's swimming beaches coast by coast.

Sanur for older travellers

Sanur has had a nickname, “Snore”, for decades, and the people who stay here tend to take it as a compliment. Pavements exist, the traffic is lighter than in Seminyak or Ubud, there are doctors and pharmacies on the main street, and most things you want are a short walk or a cheap ride away. It is a place where repeat visitors come back to the same hotel for years.

Who should skip Sanur

  • Anyone who wants nightlife. There are bars, mostly with live covers, and they are quiet by midnight. Seminyak is 30 to 45 minutes away.
  • Surfers. The breaks are on the outer reef and mostly need a boat. The surf is in Canggu and around Uluwatu.
  • Anyone after a postcard beach. The sand is pale but narrow, and the tide exposes a lot of seaweed. Sanur is easy, not spectacular.
  • Sunset people. Sanur faces east. The sky goes pink behind you, over the rooftops.

Sanur Beach: can you swim, and when?

You can, and it is one of the safest places in Bali to do it, with one condition: the tide. The whole coast sits behind a reef several hundred metres offshore. That reef is what keeps the water calm, and also what empties the beach when the tide goes out. The beach changes name every few hundred metres, but the water behaves the same everywhere.

The reef line offshore breaks the swell. Inside it the water stays flat, and at low tide it drains almost to the reef.

Sanur Beach at low tide

At low tide the sea pulls back towards the reef and the beach becomes a wide flat of wet sand, seaweed beds and rock pools. Some visitors report walking several hundred metres out before the water reaches their knees. It is not dangerous, just not swimmable, and the seaweed is heaviest in the south towards Semawang. The fix is simple: check a tide table the night before and swim in the two or three hours either side of high tide. The hours shift by about fifty minutes a day, so a timetable from your first morning will be wrong by the end of the week.

Wear reef shoes or old sandals if you walk out at low tide. Sea urchins sit in the crevices and coral cuts heal slowly in the tropics.

Mertasari Beach and kitesurfing in Sanur

The southern end of the path finishes at Mertasari, the quietest and widest stretch, with free entry, a playground, showers and toilets, and parking at about 2,000 IDR for a scooter and 5,000 IDR for a car. It is also Sanur's kitesurf beach. The south-east trade winds blow steadily from June to August, the lagoon behind the reef is flat, and several schools teach beginners there. Outside those months the wind drops and Mertasari goes back to being a place for a long, empty walk.

The same wind that brings the kitesurfers fills the sky over Mertasari in July and August, when Balinese villages fly their giant kites.

The Sanur beach walk: about 5 km of promenade, on foot or by bike

The paved path that follows the sand from Matahari Terbit in the north to Mertasari in the south is the best thing about Sanur. The shoreline was rebuilt and the path laid along it in the late 2000s, and the length is usually given as about five kilometres, though some guides count seven once you include the side loops. It passes hotel gardens, temples, fishing boats pulled up on the sand, warungs with plastic chairs and beach bars with sunbeds, and it is flat the whole way.

Walk it early. Between sunrise and about nine, the path belongs to joggers, cyclists, people doing yoga on the sand and fishermen coming in. By late morning it is hot and the shade is patchy. Bikes rent from the hotels and from stalls along the path, at around 25,000 IDR an hour (US$1.40 · C$2.00). Cycling is tolerated on most of it but slow down where it narrows past the busier cafés.

A good half day: walk north from Sindhu at dawn for the sunrise, breakfast on the sand, then cycle south to Mertasari and back before the heat.

Sanur sunrise: where and when to watch it

Because Sanur faces east, it gets the sunrise the west coast never sees. On a clear dry season morning the sun comes up out of the Badung Strait with Nusa Penida on the horizon, and sometimes Mount Agung to the north-east catches the light first. The sun rises between about 06:00 and 06:30 all year at this latitude, so be on the sand by 05:45.

Early light on the lagoon, with Mount Agung on the skyline. On a clear dry season morning it is visible from the whole beach.
  • Matahari Terbit Beach, whose name literally means “rising sun”. Wide open sky, fishing boats, and the harbour coming to life. Free.
  • Sindhu and Karang, in the centre. Fewer people, jukung outriggers in the foreground, and canoe hire on the sand at Karang for around 30,000 IDR if you want to be on the water as the sun comes up.

The wet season, roughly November to March, often brings cloud low on the horizon in the morning. The Bali weather guide has the month-by-month odds.

Sindhu Night Market: hours, prices and what to eat

Pasar Malam Sindhu is a small local food market a short walk inland from Sindhu Beach, on Jalan Pungutan. It opens around 17:00 and runs until about 22:00 every day, entry is free, and it is the cheapest proper dinner in Sanur. Expect plastic stools, smoke from the satay grills, and a mix of Balinese families and visitors.

  • Parking is about 2,000 IDR for a scooter and 5,000 IDR for a car, if you are not walking.

Things to do in Sanur beyond the beach: museum, temple and turtles

Nobody comes to Sanur for the sights. Still, a museum, a temple and a turtle centre are each worth an hour, and all of them sit close to the path.

Le Mayeur Museum

The Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur lived in Sanur from 1932 until 1958 with his wife, the Legong dancer Ni Pollok, in a house right on the beach. The house is now a small museum with around eighty of his paintings and its carved doors and stone garden intact. It is open roughly 08:00 to 15:30, closing at 12:30 on Fridays. Recent reports give the foreign adult ticket anywhere between 50,000 and 100,000 IDR, so take cash and check at the gate.

Pura Blanjong and the Blanjong pillar

In a small temple in south Sanur stands a stone pillar about 1.8 metres high, inscribed in the year 914. It is the oldest dated written record in Bali, carved in Old Balinese and Sanskrit, and it mentions a king of the Warmadewa dynasty. Most visitors walk straight past. Entry is free, but you need a sarong to go in, as at any temple. The Bali temples guide covers the dress code.

Serangan turtle centre and the mangroves

South of Sanur, a causeway leads to Serangan island and its Turtle Conservation and Education Center, which has been releasing hatchlings since 2006. It is a short visit, fifteen minutes by car, and a good one with children. On the way, the Ngurah Rai mangrove forest has wooden walkways through the trees, a cool hour out of the sun.

A day trip to Nusa Penida or Lembongan

For most visitors, this is the real activity in Sanur. The next section covers the boats. If you would rather not organise anything, a full-day tour from Sanur bundles the crossing, a driver and the main viewpoints.

Sanur harbour and fast boats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan

The boats leave from Sanur harbour at Matahari Terbit, at the north end of the beach. The new terminal has proper ticket counters, a waiting hall and a jetty, so on most services you now walk on dry instead of wading out to a ramp. A few smaller operators still load from the sand nearby. The harbour opens around 06:00 and closes around 18:00, and it shuts completely for Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence.

Sanur to Nusa Penida by fast boat

The main operators on the route include Angel Billabong, Maruti Express, Semabu Hills, Crown Fast Cruise and D'Camel. Between them, departures run from about 06:30 to 17:00, with the most boats between 07:30 and 10:00. Arrive 45 minutes before departure to check in. On landing you pay Klungkung's island levy of 25,000 IDR per person (US$1.40 · C$2.00), in cash.

Buy the return in advance, not the outbound. The last boats back fill up first, and missing one means an unplanned night on the island. Mornings are calmer than afternoons, and the strait gets rough from December to March. Everything about the island itself, from the roads to the viewpoints, is in the Nusa Penida guide, and the Nusa Penida day trip comparison explains what each tour price really covers.

Sanur to Nusa Lembongan

Lembongan is the gentler island: smaller, with walkable beaches, mangroves, snorkelling and the yellow bridge to Nusa Ceningan. Boats take 30 to 40 minutes to Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay and cost 150,000 to 250,000 IDR one way depending on the operator. It works as a day trip, but it is better with a night or two. Day trips to Lembongan from Sanur usually add snorkelling and a stop at Devil's Tear.

When the boats do not run

Services are suspended on Nyepi and often reduced around Galungan and Kuningan, and the sea cancels departures at short notice in the wet season, usually announced on the morning itself. Two rules follow. Never put a same-day international flight on the other side of a crossing, and if you are coming back from the islands at the end of your trip, sleep in Sanur that last night.

Where to stay in Sanur: which part, and hotels by budget

Sanur is long and thin, and the address makes a bigger difference than the star rating. The beach side of Jalan Danau Tamblingan, between Sindhu and the Hyatt, is the sweet spot: hotels on or near the sand, the path outside, and the restaurants and night market within walking distance.

  • North Sanur, around Matahari Terbit and the old Bali Beach Hotel site. The closest to the harbour, handy for an early boat. Busier with traffic heading to the port.
  • Central Sanur, Sindhu to Segara. The most restaurants, the night market, the most choice of rooms at every price.
  • South Sanur, Semawang to Mertasari. Quieter, greener, bigger hotel gardens, fewer places to eat after dark.
  • West of the bypass road. Residential and cheaper, but you will need a ride to the beach every time. Only worth it for a long stay in a villa.

These are average rates reported in mid-2026, and they move a lot with the dates: July, August and the Christmas weeks cost the most, and the wet season the least. Cheaper guesthouses and homestays line the streets just inland from the beach, from around 500,000 IDR a night. Compare Sanur hotels for your dates and check the map pin before you book: plenty of listings called “Sanur” are in Denpasar.

Bali airport to Sanur: Grab, taxi or private transfer

Sanur is 15 to 20 kilometres from Ngurah Rai airport, 25 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic. Late at night it can take under half an hour. The slowest window is the evening rush, roughly 17:00 to 19:30.

If your driver takes the toll road over the bay, the toll is often not included in the Grab or taxi fare and is paid in cash, around 15,000 to 25,000 IDR. Have small notes ready. Some transfer companies will also drive you straight from arrivals to the harbour if you are heading to the islands the same day, which works for a morning landing. The Bali airport guide covers the arrivals hall, SIM cards and where the Grab pickup point is.

Sanur vs Seminyak, Nusa Dua and Kuta: which is better?

Which is nicer, Sanur or Seminyak?

They are opposites. Seminyak has the restaurants, the shopping, the beach clubs and the sunset, on a beach where the ocean is open and swimming is a judgement call. Sanur has calm water, the sunrise, a beach path and quiet evenings. Couples who want to go out choose Seminyak. Families with young children and anyone who wants to slow down choose Sanur.

What is better, Nusa Dua or Sanur?

Both have calm reef water. Nusa Dua is a gated enclave of large resorts, where you tend to stay inside the hotel and take taxis for anything else. Sanur is a real town with independent restaurants, warungs and a market along the path, and rooms at every price. Nusa Dua is more polished and more expensive. Sanur is more lived-in, and closer to the boats.

Which is better, Sanur or Kuta?

Sanur for calm water and calm nights, Kuta for surf lessons, cheap shopping and being next to the airport. Kuta suits families with teenagers who want to surf. Sanur suits families with toddlers who want to paddle.

Best time to visit Sanur

May to September is the dry season, with the clearest sunrises, the calmest crossings to the islands and the kitesurf wind at Mertasari from June. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, especially July and August. October, April and early May are the sweet spot for price and weather. From December to March the rain usually comes in afternoon bursts, hotel rates drop, and the boats to Nusa Penida are cancelled more often. The month-by-month weather guide has the detail.

Prices on this page were checked in September and October 2026 and converted at the rate of 6 October: about IDR 17,900 to US$1 and IDR 12,550 to C$1. Rupiah prices are the ones that hold.

Sanur: frequently asked questions

The questions people ask before they book, answered with 2026 prices.

Is Sanur a nice area in Bali?
Yes, if you want a calm base. Sanur has a reef-protected beach, a paved beach path you can walk for about five kilometres, plenty of mid-range hotels and restaurants within walking distance, and the fast boats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan at its northern end. It is quieter than Seminyak and Canggu and less self-contained than Nusa Dua. People who find it boring usually wanted nightlife, which Sanur does not really have.
Can you swim at Sanur Beach?
Yes, at high tide. The reef several hundred metres out keeps the waves away, so the water inside is flat and shallow, which is why families like it. At low tide the water drains off the reef flat and the beach turns into a wide stretch of sand, seaweed and ankle-deep pools, especially in the south. Check a tide table and plan your swim for the hours either side of high tide.
What is the best part of Sanur to stay in?
The strip between the beach and Jalan Danau Tamblingan, from Sindhu down to the Hyatt. That is where the hotels are on or near the sand, the beach path is a few steps away and you can walk to the restaurants and the night market. North Sanur is handier for the fast boats. South Sanur, around Semawang and Mertasari, is quieter. West of the bypass road is residential and you will need a ride to the beach.
What is the best beachfront hotel in Sanur?
It depends on the trip. For families, the Hyatt Regency and Segara Village have the space, the gardens and the kids' facilities. For a couple who wants character, Tandjung Sari is the historic choice. The Andaz is the newest big name on the beach. Puri Santrian is the quiet mid-range option in the south. Compare total prices including the 21% tax and service, which many booking sites only add at checkout.
Which is better, Sanur or Kuta?
Sanur for calm water, quiet evenings and young children. Kuta for surf lessons, shopping, cheap bars and being five minutes from the airport. Kuta's beach faces open ocean, with real waves and rips. Sanur's sits behind a reef. Families with small children are usually happier in Sanur. Families with teenagers who want to surf often prefer the Kuta and Legian side.
Where do most Australians stay in Bali?
Historically Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, close to the airport and the nightlife. Families and older travellers are the big exception: Sanur and Nusa Dua have long been their pick because the water is calm. Canggu draws a younger crowd, and Ubud is the usual second base inland. The right area depends on what you will do every day, not on where everyone else stays.
Is Sanur Beach the prettiest beach in Bali?
No. Sanur is one of the easiest beaches in Bali, not one of the prettiest. The sand is pale but narrow, and low tide exposes a lot of seaweed. For a postcard beach, the Bukit coves around Uluwatu, Nusa Dua and the east coast near Padang Bai are more striking. Sanur wins on swimming, walking and convenience.
How far is Sanur from the airport?
About 15 to 20 kilometres, which takes 25 to 45 minutes by car. The worst time is the evening rush, roughly 17:00 to 19:30. A Grab costs about 100,000 to 150,000 IDR, an airport taxi 150,000 to 350,000 IDR and a pre-booked private transfer around 300,000 IDR. If the driver uses the toll road, the toll is often paid on top, in cash.
Is Sanur good for a day trip to Nusa Penida?
It is the best place to start one. Every fast boat to Nusa Penida leaves from Sanur, and staying here turns a 06:00 pickup from Canggu or Ubud into a ten-minute ride to the harbour. Book the boat for the morning, when the sea is calmer, and leave a night between your last crossing and an international flight.

Swim at high tide, cross in the morning

Sanur rewards early starts: the sunrise, the beach path before the heat and the first boat to the islands. Plan the day around the tide and the crossing.
